Cedar Unified School District is located in Keams Canyon, Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Our rural location, 150 miles northeast of Flagstaff, is populated by a community that is committed to its students and helping them achieve their potential. As educators and staff dedicated to strong academic, vocational, and athletic achievements, we are continually striving to raise the bar to assure that each of our students achieves their goals. We hope you'll use our district and school Web sites to learn more about what we have to offer our students, our community, and our staff. ![]() Dear Parents/Guardians and Community: First of all - welcome to a brand new school year! Yeah, the first day has come and gone. It has been a very busy summer trying to find Principals, teachers, mentors for teachers, and a Director for Special Education. As I write this message, the positions are still vacant, as well as some other positions. We do have a new Principal for the White Cone High School, Dr. Tommy Yazzie. He joined our district on July 1, 2010 coming from Window Rock Unified School District. Welcome to Cedar, Dr. Yazzie! School began August 2, 2010 at both Jeddito and White Cone High School. We have been very fortunate to have a nice monsoon time and thus, in some areas of White Cone, North Jeddito, and Polacca some significant rain. We cannot enter some areas due to the flooding, washed out areas, and mud. If we cannot make it to your area, it is due to one of the conditions just mentioned. We want you to make arrangements with your bus driver if you plan to get your child to a point for us to pick up and drop off that is safe for our buses can go. We have obtained the School Improvement Grant for three years for the White Cone High School, so thank you for contributing to make this happen. We will make the high school one of excellence with your support and continued efforts. The grant allows us to have a Master teacher, two Mentor teachers, three Instructional Aides, a Data Coach, teacher training on effective teaching, and an evaluation tool. It has been a very time consuming effort, but we will make it one of the best years for our students. We are very fortunate to have met a Ms. Patricia Wyatt from Los Angeles, CA by way of Mr. Dennis Jeffey, and Dorothy Jeffey, Mrs. Nizohoni Marks, and Mr. John Tandy. Ms. Wyatt would like to implement an exciting presentation to the students of White Cone High School called “Media-Arts-Xchange”. This program will give our students an opportunity to work with very talented people in the media field to learn different methods. 21st Century Skills will be involved including media literacy, creative problem solving, and cultural understanding. Teachers will integrate technology in the classroom. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus may appear on the White Cone High School Campus as students engage in their learning. We will have this announced on the radio stations and in the local newspapers. A Street Poets Writer’s Workshop will also be presented to the students. Ms. Wyatt will present this topic and proposal to the governing Board on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 for their consideration and approval. So, as you can see, we are building a very exciting program for out students in the District and we hope you can be part of out team. The elementary school has been growing steadily in the enrollment every day. We are still in the waiting period for some of the students to return. We do have a new member that has been transferred from the High School to the Jr. High Staff, Miss Betsy Dobias. She will be teaching at the Elementary School in the Jr. High level. Welcome to the Elementary School, Miss Dobias! As we close for this time period and beginning of a New School Year, we want to welcome each and every one of you to visit our campuses and help in our quest to a great year. Sincerely,
“Nothing you do for children is ever wasted. They seem not to notice us, hovering, averting our eyes, and they seldom offer thanks, but what we do for them is never wasted.” |
